    Today is the re release of Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville Record from 1993. I remember hearing this my first year in college and being floored. Who knew this album would be soo influential. It is one of Rolling Stones 500 Greatest albums of all time. Anyway here are some songs to get you in the groove to go out and buy the Re Release CD.

    I jsut got done watching I’m Not There. A movie inspired by the life and music of Bob Dylan done by Todd Haynes. It portrays different part of his life as played by 6 actors (Heath Ledger, Christian Bale,  Cate Blanchett, Ben Whishaw, Richard Gere, and Marcus Carl Franklin (who sings Tombstone Blues with Richie Havens Which was awesome).

    So Cate Blanchett soo had Dylan down. It was Quite impressive. She had his voice inflections, walk and mannerism seen in film footage of him. Christian Bale had his stage presence down pretty good.

    Anyway I would recommend it to any one who is a Dylan fan and knows some of his life story. If you don’t I would first see Martin Scorsese’s documentary No Direction Home first to get an idea of some of the major events portrayed in I’m Not There.

    So the sound track has a bunch of people covering some of Bob Dylan’s Songs. My favorite is Knockin on Heavens Door by Antony and the Johnsons:

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-I-p5F-D2E]

    The intimacy of the piano and how his voice is quivering to the point of almost crying make this, in my opinion, the best cover of this song. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

    Done by James Houston

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmfHHLfbjNQ]

    Seems kinda Fitting given the lyrics:

    Don’t get any big ideas
    They’re not gonna happen

    You paint yourself white
    And fill up with noise
    But there’ll be something missing

    Now that you’ve found it, it’s gone
    Now that you feel it, you don’t
    You’ve gone off the rails

    So don’t get any big ideas
    They’re not gonna happen

    You’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking

    Almost like the old obsolete want to no longer be obsolete. And they are trying but not succeeding. Kinda sad actaully.

    Compare it to the audio here

    My mom gave me some video of me as a child that I edited down to 2 minutes here for you viewing pleasure. I totally ripped the song off but I don’t care, I think it adds some added humor to the video.
