“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
With gas prices reaching almost 4 dollars a gallon, I decided to try to see if i could increase my gas millage by implementing some driving methods called Hypermiling. The techniques include:
Using my cruize control in the city as an accelerator. (I also use it for uphill climbing. Allowing it do the work instead of my foot).
I put the car in neutral when i was going down hills and preparing to break at lights and stop signs.
I shut my car off at stop lights and in traffic if I anticipated sitting for longer than 10 seconds.
I some points i would shut my car off if i was braking to a stop at a light.
not driving above 60 mph
I have a 1998 Chevy Prism that according to the fueleconomy.gov site gets 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. I was able to go 376.3 miles on 11.325 gallons or 33.2 in city driving. Just by doing the things above. It was my first time trying them so once i get more comfortable
Next I am going to try and lighten the weight of the car, check the tire pressure , change the air filter, and get new spark plugs.
My goal is to get 400 miles out of a tank of gas. We shall see.
